Whips and Galleys, Ruffians and Thieves
The Musical Underworld of the Jácara in 17th-Century Spain:
Voice, lute, vihuela, baroque guitar, theorbo, recorder, and percussion
Jacaras are ballads about the underworld of the ruffians, bravos, pimps, whores, pickpockets and swindlers that made up the small-time criminal underworld of 17th century Madrid and Seville. What survives of these songs is mostly the text. There are examples of the harmonic structure. Viscera has combined these relics into a program of delightful music. Who knew early music could be so earthy?
Grant Herreid: lute, vihuela, baroque guitar, voice
Paul Shipper: baroque guitar, recorder, percussion, voice
Nell Snaidas: baroque guitar, voice
Daniel Swenberg: theorbo, baroque guitar
Charles Weaver: theorbo, baroque guitar
